Sustainability – It's something every company should be concerned about, especially the supply chain industry. The supply chain industy has the 3rd largest carbon footprint of any industry in the world. This impact will only increase as populations rise.
The SmartWay program is one way in which supply chains can begin the transition into more a sustainable way of transportation by working with the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA).
- Between 1990 and 2013, freight activity grew by over 50% and is projected to nearly double again by 2040.
- Experts project that by 2050, global freight transport emissions will surpass those from passenger vehicles.
The EPA works with companies to find freight carriers who use more sustainable means to transport goods. It starts by working with shippers & carriers to monitor those shippers/carriers current footprint. With this data, partners can compare each year and work on achieving new goals in footprint reduction.
The program also works with those freight carriers & shippers to inform them of the most advanced fuel-saving technologies. The EPA works on expediting their ability to recieve and implement them.
Since 2004, SmartWay partners have saved over 196.5 million barrels of oil, lowered fuel costs by $27.8 billion and reduced emissions of harmful air pollutants by 94 million tons.
If you're curious, the EPA lists all of its partners on it's website: https://www.epa.gov/smartway/smartway-partner-list.
Alabama Motor Express currently partners with SmartWay in order to reduce their environmental footprint in all aspects of the trucking and logistics side of the supply chain.
